J.R. Smith: An important piece for the Knicks moving forward?

The man who wowed us for the first time at the 2005 Sprite Slam Dunk Contest as he effortlessly whipped the ball behind his back.

The man who told Gary Neal to “sit down” as he flushed the two handed jam with time expiring in the first half.

The only player in NBA history with multiple (2) double-digit three point field goals made in a game.

There is no doubt this man can get you off your seat at any given moment in a game. Unfortunately, we all know that half of those times can be attributed to poor decision-making both on and off the court.

Upon returning from China, JR Smith quickly got to work as he drained his first two shots beyond the arc reminding Knicks fans what he would bring to the table during his debut against the Dallas Mavericks: instant scoring off the bench.

JR Smith has certainly done his job with the Knicks these past two seasons. During his Sixth Man of the Year campaign he (surprisingly) held the court while taking over Carmelo’s scoring duties during injury and played a key role in many Knick victories this year. Given his salary, the Knicks received more than they could have asked for from the lockout China bound man.

Despite his recent accolades and successful regular season stint with the Knicks, it is time to part ways. You don’t know what kind of performance you will expect from certain players. In Earl’s case, you can bank on one certainty: inconsistency.

JR Smith is a special player. He has come along way from his early troubled days in the NBA. Nevertheless, he needs a coach who can limit his minutes and get the most efficient output from his time on the court. Coach Woodson loves JR and will ride him no matter the circumstances, until the buzzer ends.

I don’t want to say he wasn’t focused, but during this years playoff run (and arguable last years) I saw a hot JR Smith finish the regular season only to dwindle in the post season. Regular season numbers can be great accolades, but it all comes down to the post-season. Some argue that JR Smith’s suspension was the reason why the Knicks fell out of sync and fell short in the second round. I won’t fault JR for the Knicks’ second round exit, but I certainly did see a different JR following the suspension.

Assuming JR is offered more money and leaves for another team (Milwaukee), Shumpert and “NBA Ready” Hardaway Jr. will have to fill the scoring void left by JR. An addition of Tony Allen would add another defensive presence on the court- something the Knicks should  build on after a dismal defensive team effort last season (after their hot start). Relying on a rookie and a man who is a year removed from an ACL injury is not good, but I’ll take my chances on that.

Here’s to an eventful offseason.

In other news, the New York Knicks are expressing interest in Monta Ellis… I’ll take JR Smith over Monta Ellis any day.

Seats for the upcoming 2012-2013 season. If interested in any game during the season, msg me your name/number and we’ll work out a fair offer.
